Poor Boy / Lucky Man

Telmavar Records, Sony-Columbia // 2009

1. Brickman

They said his mama had cement for milk

And that his papa was a-ten foot thick

And now the world breaks like waves on his skin

And all the words and all the pain are locked within

Like wingless birds

2. Lucky Man

One boy grew up different from the rest

Without the insides of his chest

He didn’t know how he was blessed

And all the little girls thought it a blast

To shake his body really fast

To see the impact never last

Some said "poor boy"

Some said "lucky man"

He used to live with different families

That nurtured his disease

Then he'd float out with the breeze

And he implanted kaleidoscopes instead of eyes

To see the girls in multiplies

To try to figure their disguise

Some said "poor boy"

Some said "lucky man"

He tried to fill his chest with pretty jewels

But then he figured out the rules

And left the jewelry for the fools

And one day the doctors said they found a cure

Said the found a beating heart that’s pure

And they believe it will endure

Some said "poor boy"

Some said "lucky man"

3. Got It Right

don't you go, you got it right the first time

don't you know, you got it right the first time

everybody loves the feeling from above

4. My Favorite Clown

The circus is back in town

Here comes my favorite clown again

I love it when he strips his smile

Puts it in a tidy pile of shame

And then my ol' favorite clown

Paints on his faithful frown and plays

That old familiar game

For which I have no name but "Death"

We go marching

Through these scorching times

Our lungs are filled with dirt

But no amount of hurt

Will stop us trying

We go marching

Through these parching times

Rain will come again

And just like distant friends

We'll both be crying

Oh that sweet awful sound

Of my ol' favorite clown in need

I help him once again

To get back on his hands and knees

We go marching

Through these scorching times

Our lungs are filled with dirt

But no amount of hurt

Will stop us trying

We go marching

Through these parching times

Rain will come again

And just like distant friends

5. Small Change Girl

She can make the birds and bees

get down on their little knees

she can whisper to the breeze

and make her tear the bark off trees

She can make a fog horn ring

she can make the mountains swing

she will make you clip your wing

she can teach your tears to sing

She's just a small change girl...

but she's a world to me

She can turn her flesh to steel

but she can't get her scars to heal

she can make you think she's real

she can make a diamond peal

she can get your bed to shrink

she can get your ears to blink

she can get you eyes to think

and she can get a horse to drink

She's just a small change girl...

but she's a world to me

6. The Ghost Of a Thousand Little Lies

You never get your hands covered in dirt

You never get your heart covered in hurt

Lean your hand upon your cheek – I'll be your glove

I try to dress you up with my love

You walk right through my walls

You walk right through my walls

The ghost of a thousand little lies

Is haunting my lips and my finger-tips, and my eyes

The ghost of a thousand little lies

Is haunting my lips and my finger-tips, and my eyes

Take me to England cause I'm going slightly mad

(nobody will notice that I'm mad in England)

You never get your hands covered in love

Lean your cheek upon your cheek – I'll be your glove

7. Wasting My Time

Now it appears that you're my fears

And you've gone and done something stupid

with my head

You’ve been depotting all the rotten lillies

And planted dandelions instead

You’ve got this yearning almost burning

Grasping ribcage and it's got me out of my shell

You sewed our future

and our intertwining paths are mutual

Leading us straight to hell

Don’t go wasting my time

8. Jet Plane

Door shuts, here we go

same old one hit we know

Cut, slice, roll the dice

nothing worse than ending nice

Floors, flags, words in bags

open wounds and shattered rags

here we go again

(here we go again)

It hurts like a jet plane taking off

9. Little Stallion

If we could only just pretend

I'd be your horse you'd be my friend

I'd be your heart you’d be my head

We'd make believe we never bled

If we had everything we need

I'd be your secret little seed

But I got legs like a centipede

And they just know how to stampede

Gallop little horsie through the ever-green plain

Ride between the drops of the slanted rain

Let the wind go dancing through your silver mane

Till the sky will open

making and faking and shaking and breaking love

shaking and breaking and faking and making love

breaking and shaking and making and shaking love

faking and making and breaking and faking love

10. Your Anchor

She said baby you're my gold -

I said no babe, I'm your banker

She said baby you're my chains -

I said no babe I'm your anchor

I said baby you're my wings -

she said no babe, you're a fish

I said baby you're my dream -

she said no hun, I'm your wish

She said baby you're my river -

I said no babe, I'm your drain

She said baby you're my color -

I said no babe I'm your stain

I said baby you're my diamond -

she said no babe, I'm just your pick

I said baby you are magic -

she said no hun, just a trick

She said baby you can see me -

I said baby I just sense

She said baby you're my castle -

I said no hun, I'm your fence

I said baby you're my lover

she said no hun just your maid

I said baby I adore you -

she said no babe you're just afraid.

11. Losing Hand

Your slot machine is broken

but that’s where my coins will go

I'm a gambling man, I am,

but I like it when the odds are low

You're dealing from your elbow

and the aces are packing in

I'm a gambling man, I am,

and I've seen a cheating girl, I've seen

Tonight, too hard to stop two hearts to beat

To know two rights from wrong

Tonight too hard to deal two hearts

When everybody's letting go

The bets are on the table

and the queen of spades is here

the one eyed jack of diamonds

is whispering in her ear

saying "girl look out"

Tonight, too hard to stop two hearts to beat

To know two rights from wrong

Tonight too hard to deal two hearts

When everybody's letting go

the stakes are getting higher

so I fold my cards and go

I'm a gambling man, I am

And I know a losing hand, I know

12. Painting On The Past

I think I'll go down to the river

I think I'll dangle all my hooks

I think I like the way she's hungry

I think I like the way she looks

Nothing seems to last

I'm painting on the past

Nothing seems to last

I'm painting on the past

You're just like all the rest

Girl you ain't the first

and you certainly ain't the last!

I think I'll roll down to the city

I think I'll wear my leather boots

I think I like the way she's lying

I really love the way she looks

Nothing seems to last

I'm painting on the past

Nothing seems to last

I'm painting on the past

You're just like all the rest

Girl you ain't the first

and you certainly ain't the last!

13. Out In The Cold

Oh, tell me David, what have you done?

Where has Bat-Sheva's sweetheart gone?

What's taken over? When is enough?

When the going gets lonely, the lonely get rough

Oh, times have changed since you became king

Since that boy with the flute, that played with a sling

But you still fight from a distance, that sling in your hands

If anyone gets near, you don’t give them a chance

Ohhh pray… they have left you

Ohhh pray… they have left you… here in the cold

Oh tell me David, with just that one stone

You didn’t really think Golliath is gone

Now there you go prancing up Jerusalem road

And that giant inside you is starting to get hold

Michelle's in the window, Bat Sheva's in bed

Jonathan's left you, and Uria's dead

Now I don’t pretend to know night time from day

But if I were your god, I'd have something to say

Ohhh pray… they have left you

Ohhh pray… they have left you… here in the cold

14. My Latest Sin

Just like a distant thunder

My conscience is rolling in the back of my head

But your lips keep riding on in the darkness

Our guns on the floor,

near the makeup and clothes that we shed

We both trail our own paths

But the grass has worn out our parting ways

And I used to think I rode with the devil

But I'm left on my own,

even he hasn’t shown up these days

Don’t cry my latest sin

I don’t buy that (self)righteous being

Calm your worried soul

The demons and angels left us here all alone

Much like crickets at the sunrise

My guilt is fading in the depth of my chest

Your empire is brought down around us

But we're pressed on the wall

and don’t care 'bout the fall of the rest.

I pray you find your old path

But mine was lost so long ago

They say old roads were built on old rivers

Maybe that’s why I'm lost,

'cause I can't carry on with the flow

Don’t cry my latest sin

I don’t buy that (self)righteous being

Calm your worried soul

The demons and angels left us here all alone.
